Serengeti Scholarships

How we function

  • We have close ties with the school and the Mara Diocese. Girls from local primary schools are chosen by a board of local headteachers and village representatives overseen by the Mara Diocese. The charity’s criteria are that:
    • the girls are from the poorest families who cannot afford the fees
    • they have performed well in the National Primary School Leaving exam
    • they have a record of working hard
    • they are mature enough to enjoy life and thrive in a boarding school.
  • We exercise tight control on how our finances are spent. We pay fees for Issenye Secondary School to the Mara Diocese, fees direct to government sixthforms and university/colleges, and maintenance grants quarterly direct to students. Our UK trustees meet regularly, receive receipts of spending and evaluate its impact. We have the advantages of being a small charity. Our lines of communication are short. We can respond quickly when necessary. The trustees volunteer their services and their visits to the school are at no cost to the charity.
  • All the charity’s funds are spent in Tanzania.
